BALTIMORE – Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, 7th District, today issued the following statement in honor of International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women – while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

“The theme for International Women’s Day 2020 is “Each for Equal.” To me, what means each of us has a responsibility through our words and our actions to stand up for equality. Whether in the workplace, in government, in our communities or in our homes with our families, we must all work to ensure everyone – especially women – has equal access to opportunity, hope and happiness.

Although we’ve made great progress since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, there is still much to be done. Women and girls are still not valued as they deserve to be. Having spent more than 25 years fighting for social and economic justice, better education, and strengthening the health and wellbeing of children, women, seniors, families and workers, I am deeply committed to these principles.

I am heartened by the increased number of women rising to leadership in business, politics and social justice work, and I am running for Congress to stand with them and support them in the continued fight for equality for women. I am proud to stand up for people in our community who can’t stand up for themselves. I will stand up to Donald Trump and anyone else who stands in the way of our fight to secure a fair and inclusive future for all people.

I was fortunate to have a strong, supportive husband, the Honorable Elijah Cummings, who believed in me and told me I could do anything I set out to accomplish. He believed that about all women, and worked tirelessly to make it so. His legacy of support for the underserved lives on, and is a source of inspiration to me. I am honored to continue the work we began together, and to use my deep experience to build on it.

On Tuesday, March 10, I will launch the “Truth and Solutions” campaign to shine a light on the tremendous need and opportunity that exists in our community. I look forward to sharing more about who I am, what I believe in, and my vision for a more equitable America.”

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings is running in Maryland’s Democratic primary on April 28th, 2020.
